New Stryker Hip Recall of Rejuvenate and ABG II Modular-Neck Stems

The new Stryker hip replacement recall has dealt the a big blow to the manufacturers (and the defense) of metal on metal hip replacement implants.

Metal on Metal Hip Implants Called More Dangerous Than Ceramic Or Plastic Hip Implants

This adds to another recent blow to the hip manufacturing industry. Recently, the British equivalent to the American FDA announced that the Metal on Metal hip implants should not be used since they have proven to be significantly less safe than their alternatives.

The British action caused the FDA to convene a special meeting and where they discussed the matter and looked into ways to study it… at last. With the high profile DePuy hip replacement recall of the ASR hip implants in 2010, which are also metal on metal models, you’d think that they would have have done so already.

What Took Them So Long In The U.S.?

There is no central data base of all hip replacement cases and their failure rates in the U.S., unlike in other countries. This makes statistics harder to come by. Never mind the hundreds of thousands of people who have suffered painful injuries due to failure of these implants and had to undergo the ordeal of additional surgery to replace the faulty implants and repair the damage.

Based on data in Australia and the UK, where such data banks exist, it has been shown that failure rates of metal on metal implants are at least three times as high as those of the alternative devices.

Now, Stryker has initiated a voluntary product recall of its Modular-Neck Stems as well as its Rejuvenate hip implant. Both of these are metal on metal devices. It was discovered that the metal on metal hip implants could corrode, which in turn would cause tissue damage and swelling.

This is in addition to another recent recall of the Stryker Accolade femoral stem in April, which had been used with the MITCH TRH modular head/acetabular cup.

The Hip Implant Metal Toxicity Issue

Of course, there’s also the issue of metal toxicity (particularly Cobalt and Chromium)j. Surprisingly, that isn’t mentioned much if at all in the press about the most recent Stryker hip recall, where the focus is on “corrosion” and tissue damage.

Either way, if you have a metal on metal implant, you need to make sure to have your blood checked for metal levels. The thing is that while pain in the hip area is easy to spot and easy to associate with the problematic hip implants, metal poisoning can be much easier to miss, yet it can be just as dangerous or even more so.
